Water Heater Glossary

A comprehensive guide to water heater terminology, parts, and plumbing definitions. We've put this together to help you better understand your system and communicate easily with our technicians.

Anode Rod

A sacrificial rod installed inside a water heater tank to prevent corrosion. It attracts corrosive elements in the water, rusting itself so the tank doesn't.

Descaling

The process of removing mineral buildup (scale) from inside a water heater, particularly important for maintaining tankless units.

Dip Tube

A plastic tube that directs incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank so it can be heated efficiently, preventing it from mixing with the hot water at the top.

Expansion Tank

A small secondary tank installed on the cold water line to absorb excess pressure caused by thermal expansion as water heats up.

Gas Control Valve

The main control unit on a gas water heater that regulates the flow of gas to the pilot light and main burner based on the thermostat setting.

Heating Element

The component in an electric water heater that directly heats the water. Most electric tanks have an upper and lower element.

Pilot Light

A small, continuous gas flame used to ignite the main burner in a gas water heater when the thermostat calls for heat.

Sediment Buildup

The accumulation of loose minerals (like calcium and magnesium) at the bottom of a water heater tank, which can reduce efficiency and cause popping noises.

T&P Valve (Temperature & Pressure Relief)

A critical safety valve that opens to release pressure if the temperature or pressure inside the tank gets dangerously high.

Tankless Water Heater

A system that heats water directly without the use of a storage tank, providing a continuous supply of hot water on demand.

Thermocouple

A safety device in gas water heaters that senses whether the pilot light is burning. If the flame goes out, it shuts off the gas supply.

Thermostat

The control that regulates the water temperature. In gas heaters, it's part of the gas control valve; in electric, they are mounted against the tank.
