5 Signs Your Water Heater Is About to Fail

Catch the Problem Before It's a Disaster
A failing water heater can cause significant water damage to your home and leave you taking cold showers. Fortunately, water heaters usually give warning signs before they completely give out. Here are 5 signs to watch for:
1. Age of the Unit
Most traditional tank water heaters last between 8 and 12 years. If your unit is approaching or past this age, you should start planning for a repair, even if it seems to be working fine. You can check the age by looking at the serial number on the manufacturer's sticker.
2. Rusty Water
If rusty water is coming from your hot water taps, it's a strong indicator that the inside of your water heater tank is rusting. Once a tank starts to rust, a leak is inevitable.
3. Strange Noises
As mentioned in our other post, popping, rumbling, or banging noises usually indicate severe sediment buildup. While sometimes a flush can fix it, long-term sediment buildup can weaken the tank and cause it to crack.
4. Leaks Around the Base
Any water pooling around the base of your water heater is a major red flag. It could be a loose valve, but it could also mean the tank has a small fracture. If you see water, call a professional immediately.
5. Not Enough Hot Water
If your showers are getting colder faster than they used to, or if the water isn't getting as hot, the heating element (in electric heaters) or the burner (in gas heaters) might be failing.
Don't Wait for a Flood
If you notice any of these signs, don't ignore them. Replacing a water heater on your own terms is much less stressful and expensive than dealing with a flooded garage or utility closet. Call New Orleans Water Heaters for a thorough inspection.
